Current Fostering Statistics

Decline in Fostering Households : The number of fostering households in England has decreased by 6% since 2021, with 42,615 households reported in 2024. ( Reported by The Fostering Network)
Children in Care : As of March 2024, approximately 56,390 children were living with foster families, representing 67% of the 83,630 children in care. (Reported by The Fostering Network )

Why the Urgent Need?

Starting at a new school can be daunting, but AKG has taken it all in stride. Recently, her Foster Carers received an exciting phone call from her new school – AKG had been named a Star Pupil! This recognition highlights her hard work, positive attitude, and determination to settle into her new environment. We’re incredibly proud of AKG for embracing change with such enthusiasm and for thriving in her new chapter.

Overcoming challenges takes strength, and AL has shown just that. Following a recent operation, AL has made an outstanding recovery, showing bravery and resilience every step of the way. In the South, we are thrilled to spotlight a remarkable child who has taken the initiative to apply for their School Council! What is Fostering?

Foster care provides vulnerable children and young people with a temporary, safe place to live when they’re unable to stay with their birth family. However, fostering is much more than simply offering a roof over a child's head; it’s about shaping their future. Whether a placement lasts two nights or two years, foster parents can make a difference that lasts a lifetime.

Why Children Need to Be Fostered

Children are only ever removed from their homes if the environment poses a direct threat to their safety or if a serious issue has occurred that makes it impossible for the child to be looked after by their family. While neglect and abuse are common reasons, children may need foster care for a range of other reasons, including:

- Short-Term Illness of a parent

- Temporary Family Issues that compromise a child's safety

- Loss or Death within the family

- Domestic Violence

- Parent's Incarceration

Foster families provide a vital role in creating a stable, nurturing environment for these children, giving them the space to grow, heal, and develop during a time of crisis.

Types of Fostering

1. Short-Term Fostering

Short-term fostering is the most common type of fostering, providing temporary care for children and young people who need to be looked after while long-term solutions are worked out. This type of fostering can last from a few days to up to two years. It allows foster parents to make a significant impact during a time of immense change in a child's life.

2. Long-Term Fostering

Long-term fostering involves a child or young person staying with a committed foster parent until they reach adulthood. This provides the consistency and stability that children need, allowing them to grow up within one family and develop a greater sense of belonging. It also helps them to settle in a local community and build positive, lasting relationships.

3. Respite Fostering

Respite foster care offers a much-needed break to other foster parents or birth families. It usually lasts between a couple of days to a week, often on weekends or during school holidays. As a respite foster carer, you provide a safe and caring environment, allowing other families to rest and recharge.

4. Emergency Fostering

Emergency fostering occurs when a child or young person needs to be moved to a safe environment urgently, often with only a few hours’ notice. This may be due to a severe incident of violence, a parent’s sudden illness, or an unexpected family crisis.

Who Can Foster?

Fostering is open to people from all walks of life. We welcome applications regardless of your marital status, sexual orientation, religious or cultural background, or whether you have a disability or medical condition, as long as it’s stable and doesn’t impact your ability to care for a child. You can foster if you:

- Are at least 21 years old

- Have a stable home environment with a spare bed for the child

- Enjoy spending time with children and young people

- Have no criminal convictions related to violence or sexual offenses against children

- Are willing to attend training courses designed to help foster carers in the vital work they do

- Are available to meet with all people involved in the child’s life

Common Questions:

1. Can I foster if I am currently unemployed?

Yes, your availability will be reviewed if your employment circumstances change. Being at home can provide stability and consistency for a child in care.

2. Can I foster if I am working?

Yes, as long as you have sufficient time to devote to the child's needs.

3. Can I foster if I do not own my home?

Yes, you need to show that you can provide a safe, secure environment, whether you own or rent your home.

4. Can I foster if I already have children of my own?

Yes, but it’s important to discuss fostering with your children to ensure they are happy with your decision.

5. Can I foster if I have a criminal conviction?

It depends on the nature of the conviction, when it was committed, and how you have lived since. However, convictions for violence or sexual offenses against children will automatically exclude you. All applicants undergo a criminal records check.

One of our dedicated foster carers, who has been with us for 14 years, shares her heartfelt experience, encapsulating the essence of what it means to foster:

“Being a foster mother for the past 14 years has been challenging and rewarding. The children we have looked after have all bonded with us, which in turn gave them more confidence and self-belief. There have been situations where I had to cancel a placement due to challenges I knew I couldn't manage, as I had younger birth children in my home. As a foster mother, I feel you need to know your weaknesses and strengths and ensure you protect yourself in terms of managing risk. I get a lot of satisfaction from fostering, especially when I see the transformation of my looked-after children, and also knowing that because of me, they feel hopeful and happy. Most of my looked-after children end up calling me mum. They all bond with the entire family. Sometimes, it's very difficult to say goodbye to them because we feel they become part of the family. I have thoroughly enjoyed fostering and have no regrets.”

As we commemorate Foster Care Fortnight 2024 from May 13th to May 26th, we embrace this year's theme, #FosteringMoments. This theme highlights the moments, both big and small, that define fostering journeys. Here are some heartfelt stories from our dedicated foster carers at Regional Fostering Services, showcasing the profound impact of fostering on both carers and children.

Liz's Journey

"I love being a foster carer to help the children and enjoy being involved with supporting them to grow," Liz shares. Her most memorable moment as a foster carer is when P received the 'Top Award' at her school for being an outstanding pupil. This achievement encapsulates the joy and pride that fostering brings.

Mazz and Leigh's Story

Mazz and Leigh find immense fulfillment in their role as foster carers. "Every child deserves a safe place, and we can provide that for them," they affirm. Over the years, they have witnessed numerous proud moments, one of which stands out prominently. "One in particular that stands out is when K overcame her fear of water, which took 18 months to achieve!" This moment symbolizes the resilience and determination fostered within a supportive environment.

Sandra's Pride in J

Sandra beams with pride as she recounts J's recent accomplishments. "I was so proud of J. This morning he was the phonics teacher. His teacher asked him to sit on her chair, and the kids gathered around as he helped with the phonics lesson." J's progress in his booster classes has been remarkable, highlighting the importance of personalized support and encouragement.

Sarah O's Reflections on CL

Sarah O reflects on CL's transformative journey over four years. "I am immensely proud of what CL has achieved. She arrived with me at the beginning of Covid, very shy and timid. She has massively grown in confidence and is now able to participate and make the most of what she is offered." One of CL's significant milestones was traveling to South Africa to help on a game farm. Now studying at university and planning for her master's degree, CL exemplifies the power of nurturing care in unlocking potential.

Children's Achievements

As always, we have had a huge number of achievements from our children in the last month. Two children, in particular, were chosen for their brilliant successes.

For London, Management has selected a young person who has engaged brilliant with their Assistant Social Worker during Direct Work!

A young person for North has been accepted on a University Degree course which they will start in September!

Congratulations to them both. Very proud ��

This made us smile..

This made us smile yesterday evening, on a visit with one of our looked after children (girl aged 5yrs).

We discussed people who listen to her, are special to her and who have special qualities. We provided her with a Superhero colouring-in sheet and asked her "Who is your Superhero"?

She drew her foster carer . She has a supersized heart and great listening ears as you can see in the drawing.
